IBTC MVS Work Party

Visit on 14th March by Peter, Martin and Gill and on 15th March by David Wall, Dennis Bulcock and Phil Hudson.   We had a good day on Thursday sugar-soaping the forepeak and E/R sides down to the Engine housing after a good vacuum throughout.   We think we are nearly ready to do some painting on the upper parts.   I suspect more work on the engine housing is required.   We will need a painting plan to ensure it is done in a sensible order or there will be a right mess!

On Thursday the team were met by Diggory who explained a bit about what was going on, that the students are working on small boats at the moment but would move on to TS later.  All loose fixings and metal parts were picked up and left in a bucket. Two bilge pumps and the hand pump suction with hoses were removed to allow access underneath. We completed scraping of all the wood below the horizontal stringer in both the fore peak and the engine room and cleaned with the vacuum.

If this is good enough the next task will be to clean down the areas ready for painting. There is a layer of grease/oil under the engine bay which may need a stronger de-greaser than sugar soap. The keel is heavily split and with deep cracks – we need to find out if there is more work to be done to this – but it can’t really be painted as it is. Some keel bolts have been removed leaving holes. The treatment of all the hard to get to areas also needs to be considered.   There is a progress log in one of the cleaning boxes which must be completed each week, with if possible a plan for the next crew.
